President Obama designated portions of Fort Monroe a National Monument in 2011, his first exercise of this authority under the Antiquities Act. It guarded navigation of the Chesapeake Bay and Hampton Roads. Former Confederate President Jefferson Davis was imprisoned here for two years.
We all know the National Anthem…here is the fort that was defended and gave Francis Scott Key the idea for the Star Spangled Banner…from the 1814 Battle of Baltimore.
